This is one of my favourite things to do in life – work with another therapist and help feeding cases become easier and less stressful for them. I have supervised university students in hospitals, mentored speech pathologists through Speech Pathology Australia and now mentor a number of therapists (speech pathologists, dietitians and occupational therapists) who all work with feeding cases. I am truly honoured when these mentees tell me that my passion, knowledge and experience in feeding clearly comes through in our sessions. But even more worthwhile is seeing these therapists begin to problem solve and use our mentoring sessions to make long lasting and positive changes in their caseloads.
Supporting future generations of therapists to be the best they can not only helps them but grows the knowledge base in our field as well as lifts up the feeding therapist name – we do amazing work when we all work together.
Feeding mentoring can be face to face or using online platforms such as Zoom and Skype but it can also be as easy as picking up the phone and having a chat. Therapists out of area have also arranged to come to my clinic and work shadow me.
Why do I mentor therapists? Because I know it takes more than “attending one feeding course” to actually know how to help a child with feeding difficulties. I know it’s stressful for these clinicians who don’t have the clinical knowledge after attending a “one off” course to be then expected by their managers to get back into clinic and treat feeding cases.
Mentoring with me means that we will breakdown the theory so that you can turn it into practical steps, it will allow you to see the bigger picture.
We can run through what an assessment might look like, how to do an oral muscle assessment, and then review in our next session, what you saw when the child was eating and how to help fix the feeding difficulties.
MENTORING PLAN: monthly sessions - this helps you put the strategies into practice with your patients in between our sessions and then review treatment progress with me. I want you to be able to clearly see that what you are doing with your patient is fixing the feeding difficulties. It’s an awesome feeling when this happens, and monthly mentoring sessions will give you that support.
